The Detroit Post Office continued to use serial numbers for control of their incoming special delivery mail even though the use of such numbers had become optional in 1920. The serial numbers for the five E12 FDCs sent by Howard Beck to his friends in Detroit are given below. Receiving backstamps on the covers also indicate they were all recorded as being received at 3 pm on July 13, the day after the E12 First Day. It’s apparent that the Detroit Post Office was daily receiving many special delivery items.

R. E. Smith 14991
William N. Swan 15067
Harmon Wendell 15085
Fred Schmalzriedt 15124
D. L. Ballentine 15191
